did our first track workout. just a nice 2x1mile at 5:29 pace for me. warm and cool 1.5....Was a really easy pace, and without my watch i would have gone way too fast. however, i did my math wrong on the first one and was shooting for 1:27 laps instead of 1:21. so i hit a bad 5:37. but i wasn't too worried. not terrible. next one i fixed it and hit a nice 5:25. good workout.

weights after. feeling better. and getting big! (: (or maybe i should call it getting closer to a normal size)

That's not even close to what you ran! The test is no good if you guys can't add up your mileage.

Three laps is 1200 meters. You ran most of a 4th lap. Did you hit the homestretch for that last lap? If so that is 1500. You have 1479 recorded. Is that right?

met at the double churches at 10:30 and ran with some of the guys. we were sitting around before we started, then i saw James Holt running past us, so i yelled at everyone to get going so we could run with him. but he was moving pretty well so we didn't catch him for 2 miles. finally we got him and we ran with him for a couple miles and talked. that was fun. then we started our 10minute tempo. my pace was supposed to be at 5:15, which is the fastest tempo i've ever done on the road, but now that i think about it, it was only 10 minutes. although i hit a little slow: 5:21, 5:19. but i had to stop at a stop light for 5 seconds which killed a bit of momentum, but i still would've been slow. I'm fine with it though. i put in a good effort and abel and byron ran an amazing tempo. those kids did good.

warm and cool 1.5miles.

workout on the track consisting of 3x1600meters. with 3min rest in between. goal time was 5:29. i worked hard on pushing the side of the track that had the wind blowing hard. splits were: 5:26.8, 5:26.3, 5: 23.4. so i went a little fast on all of them. i felt decent. on the last one i ran the last 200 on my toes and tried to run smooth, which is why its a little bit faster.

lifted after. then 11 pull ups. (i'm trying to see how much better my pull ups get over the season. so far the first time we lifted i got 10. then the next i got 11, and this is the third time) i tried to do 12 but i couldn't get that last inch of my chin to get over the bar.

met with some of the guys at 10 today and did a 20min tempo. we did 1.75mi warm up then started. we were shooting for 5:15-5:20. for the most part, on the way there i was a bad uphill slope, and i tried to push this part harder to be sub 5:40, because i knew i could average it out on the way back.

the turn around was sooner than i thought, but we didn't miss it. then down hill we went and i was hitting sub 5 for most of it, then the last 10min was on a trail that had up and down hill, and i guess i went to slow here, but i felt i was doing well. i kept looking at how much longer we had so the time went by slow, then finally we finished and i felt pretty good. then i looked at my average pace: 5:34. still not it. i dont know why i cant do that pace. i think i just physch myself out before the workout because it seems like such a fast pace.

good overall week, with doubles just beginning. still disappointed about todays run. but just need to keep doing my best. rolling and stretching is a must right now.

am: easy 3. felt good....i think. i dont even remember it so i must have been pretty tired.

pm: 1.5 mile warm up and cool. workout consisted of 4x1mile with 3min rest. time i was going for was 5:21 (8 seconds faster than last week) had to push a little harder than last week to hit the times, but still wasn't terrible. but there was a terrible head wind in all directions so that made it harder (the track is kind of in a dome type thing, so literally it was in all directions)

first one i cruized it and was just trying to get on a good groove: 5:23. second one i started to run better and ran into the wind better and i got a 5:19. third was a bit harder and the casey, byron, and colton behind me always push this one hard so they kept me on my toes when i heard them getting closer, 5:19. last one i started feeling a bit tight but i maintained my form and pushed the last lap a bit, 5:18.

good  workout. i really like it when i get splits all within 5 seconds because then i know i ran it consistent and solid. weights after. my lower left back hurt a ton, and so i did one rep less on most everything cause it hurt pretty bad. did 15 push ups after cause i forgot about the pull ups, so then i did then and got 10 pull ups.

we did this to help us hit our tempo times that have been hard lately. i'm trying to get 5:15- 5:20 min/mile pace for 20 minutes. i woke up really tired still and went to the school to sign up then went on a 2 mile warm up with the guys. took forever for the race to start but it finally did.

i went out hard but not really cause i was just trying to keep an even pace. felt easy at first and we were a little slow on the grass parts, but it was pretty flat which made it easier. i ran 5:20 pace for the first two miles with byron because that was his pace then the last mile i picked it up to bring mine down. ended with 5:16 average with is good for me because it's the first time i've finally done my time right. i guess this was kind of cheating because i did the pace for 16 min instead of 20..oh well!

i got a sweet bag with goodies in it for winning...second place didn't get anything... sorry byron! :)

first one felt pretty easy, but i thought it was only cause it was the first one, 5:12. second one was just as easy and i was feeling very smooth, 5:12. third one i one to push the third lap a bit but still was feeling very manageable, 5:11. last one i knew i was feeling great so i just pushed it hard but still didn't want to go crazy so just kept it at an even, 5:11. cause you all know how i love to hit the same time :)

got there a little late so had to warm up by myself for 1.5 miles. tommy from snow canyon was there, and a couple DH kids.

someone started the race and we roughly got out. i stayed in the top 5 for the first mile and just tried to stay on pace. 60% of this race seemed to be uphill so i thought i'd end a little off pace. after a bit it was only me, byron, and tommy in a pack and i still was just a step behind them because everytime i tried to get up next to them they would pick it up a lot to get back ahead...so i just let them lead, cause i didn't mind. last half mile was all down hill and it ended on the track. this is where i made up for most of the time. last 600 meters or so i took off harder and ended pretty well.

ending pace was 5:17. close enough, and i still felt good at the end. rachel won on the girls side too, second week in a row we both took the gold :)

Nice run Mike. Its early still, you'll be dropping huge chunks of time from here. 4:39 is a good starting point.

am: 3. felt really tight.

pm: week changed around a bit and we had our 30 minute tempo today today instead of tomorrow. coach ran with the girls today and told me and keep my pace at 5:40 to help push the other boys to stay with me the whole time. i felt really good from the beginning except for my calves which killed because they were so tight from yesterday's race... we had 5 guys stay with us from 26 minutes which was really good! the last 4 minutes it was just me and abel and we were only 7 feet from where i was last week which was very good! we hit 5:40 pace dead on, and it was a decently windy day.

NEED TO ROLL!

went out at about 11:30am. felt amazing outside! i was a little sloggish but not bad. we went out around the big moutain and out another big for 3 miles then we started our 15 min tempo...which seemed like nothing after having it be 30min for the last little bit.

the first 2 miles were in a downward slope, but nothing huge. first mile was 5:13. second still felt alright it was a 5:20. last one we hit the big uphill that Coach Holt hit on his big tempo but on the other side of it. it slowed us down a lot, and we (casey and I, byrun was 5 feet or so behind) tried to even it out on the downhill after but we didn't. ended with a 5:28. good workout. casey stuck in it well.

Nice week. goals for next week is to hit every run (monday!) and continue to take care of my legs consistently.

pm: we had 4xmile repeats today (supposed to hit 5:14) not the best workout i've had. first one i probably pushed too hard but it was the same as the last time we did it. 5:12. rest of the workout i felt i was giving the same amount of effort i was suppposed to, but the wind slowed it down a couples seconds. 5:17, 5:15, 5:15. i was disappointed with this workout, it's the first one this season i haven't hit all the times i was supposed to. i think more than the wind, i was just not in it. too many other things in my mind so i didn't prepare as good for it as i should have. its alright though.

I've been doing the garbage bucket w/ cold water a lot recently... you don't even have to make it unbearably cold for it to be effective. I just fill it up w/ cold water from the sink and put in one tray of ice cubes. That does enough and it helps a lot, esp for something like shin splints.

Woke up at 6:30 to get to the buses that would take us to the starting line. it was supposed to leave at 7:15, but it ended up leaving at 7:50! i wish i just had my mom drop me off so i could've slept in more. looking around at the start i saw logan fielding and 2 other guys that looked fast, so my goal was top 4, at 5:45 pace. (and no miles over 6!)

race started and it was pretty much all down hill for the first 2 miles. first one i felt good and smooth 5:32. second mile (batman fell off) i was in the second group and logan and them were 15 feet ahead, still feeling good, coach told us to slow down a bit so we did...5:47. next mile was a bit uphill then down into a canyon that was like a rollercoaster of ups and downs, 5:40. still lots of rollercoasters but slightly downhill, focusing on my form here 5:23.

mile 5 had a tad uphill here as we came out of the canyon, a bit of wind but i still feel like i could handle it. i was lucky enough to have my teamate casey kimzey and rodney who runs for dixie state college running with me this whole time and we kind of took turns leading it. we passed one of the guys ahead of us so now i was shooting for 3rd 5:35. mile 6 was a big increase in uphill and i didn't hit it as well, i tried pushing it hard but it was ugly 5:55. next mile was about the same, all three of us weren't running hot, and logan got away on these two miles 5:54.

next mile i passed an aid station that had a lot of people i knew, and this got me moving again and i made bit of a push before the next uphill around the mountain 5:39. this hill i hit much better and even under my goal pace which is good cause it was even steeper (but not as long) then i evened it down more with the down hill after, also i started leading a bit more here 5:44.  then the third and final big hill came and this is where i was worried i would go over 6min/mile. i hit it pushing hard and got up the first part thinking i was done, then i turned the corner and found out i only did half of it. then i cleared the top and tried to get moving again on the down hill, my legs started getting really tight here. casey and rodney fell off here and i was alone 5:58.

coach holt joined me here and helped me finish the last three miles. he really helped me get going again 5:37. i could feel i was almost there and i started pushing harder, coach paced me very good 5:29. then last .9 i hit in 4:46 (5:25 pace) Placing 3rd place! Also my average pace was 5:40!!!! thats what i do every wednesday! i was very pleased and i still felt very good once i finished. cooled down 1.5miles.

i was sad that the course was .2 short. but nothing i could do. i figured my time would've been 1:14: 09 if i continued at 5:25 pace so i'm very pleased with that. Good week, good half, now i can just focus on track! miles next week will be easy to recover from this

coach had me put on hurdle out in the third lane for me to jump over every lap to kind of get used to for the steeple chase. it was pretty easy the whole time, but it kind of stopped my momentum and didn't help my workout at all. i used it for the first 2 and two laps of the third on and thats it. also there was a pretty good wind today again.

first mile i didn't hit any laps on right and just didn't get moving in time 5:12. second one was better but took a lot 5:08. third on was 5:12 again. and last one i made sure i hit a 5:07 so i could at least say i hit it once.

You own the street, you set the pace. on the tredmil....it pretty much runs you. your the machine, its the human. its like the difference between being ranch cattle and a cow on a farm...no thats a bad example....buts thats the only thing i can think thats close.

i tried so hard to push myself into a groove and get my legs rolling, but i just couldn't do it. i only got close the last one because of byron, who took the lead at the beginning and made me run a fast first lap, then continued to push it to the end.

race is this week and i want to get state qualifyings. but looking at the people that are going, there isn't anyone besides our team that has runners that look like they will do it. I cant depend on others to get my time, i have to be able to push myself. i cant run like i did today.

Lotta fast running this week mike!

Race: Kanab invite (2 Miles) 00:09:59, Place overall: 1
Total Distance

this was a weird meet. we had every weather you could think of in the 14 hours we were there. blazing hot, windy, shady and nice, rainy, hard rain, windy rain, hotter, less hot, you name it! anyway i felt like i was warming up the whole meet :)

so we had the 2 mile first. warmed up 1.5 miles then went to the starting line. my goal was to just qualify for state (10:01) so i wouldn't be too tired for the other races. no other compitition. race started and casey and i started to switch off leading each lap. we did alright but were a bit slow each lap. first mile was 5:02 or so. i felt good, wasn't to hard. then with 800 left we had built up to be like 10 seconds off pace and i realized we weren't going to make it at this pace so i took off and ran faster so i would qualify, and i did just barely 9:59.

next race was 300m hurdles. i warmed up and was excited to finally do this. i was in lane 7 which i didn't like but oh well. race started and i did terrible. i just studdered too many times and messed up. got a 47.2 and second in my heat but didn't qualify for finals which is embarrassing for how small the meet was. i dont think coach will let me run this event anymore but i want another chance.

then the mile. by now it was pretty windy and my goal was just state qualify again (4:35) race started and i went in third letting a few unexpeirenced guys break the wind for me during the first lap. then i passed them and on the second lap there was one guy ahead of me and i decided to let him lead again to break the wind but that was a big mistake because he slowed down a ton which made my second lap way to slow and cost me the time. i was mad so i passed him and tried to make up the time but didn't get it, 4:39.

then, since didn't make finals in the 300m hurdles, my last event was the 800 in the medley. my team did very well and we were on pace to qualfy if i ran a 2:03. first lap was 1:03, then i pushed and pushed trying to get it...but i got another 1:03 for a 2:06. i was sad i didnt get it for the team.

overall good week of milage and workouts! missed my goal of qualifying for all 4 events, but i know I'll get the other two soon...not the hurdle one :-)... i was mostly disappointed with my mile time but next week is our PV meet which will have a TON of compitition and fast kids and i know there will be fast time there.

there is only two meets that offer the steeple, UVU invite and SUU invite. We are going to the SUU one so i get one chance :)

good morning. i was very excited for the race...and nervous. warmed up 2 miles and just got prepared mentally. i didn't really know what goal to set time wise since i hadn't been hitting very fast times lately, so i just wanted to be in the mix.

race started and i got out ok. top 5 or so. pace went out slow cause no one ever wants to lead the race. Ben Saarel was their but i knew his coach told him not to go all out because his main race was the 2 mile the next day, but i dont think anyone else knew that so they all sat behind him. ~1:07 next lap i started to move up and got better postion..race was going by really fast 1:06. third lap was the best one. people in front of me were ben, tomy (who led a bit of it), jake heslington, and franco. 1:05. at the beginning of the last lap i noticed ben and jake were starting to take off, so i tried to squiz inbetween franco and tomy to go with them cause i felt great, but franco didn't like that very much. he threw an elbow into my side and made me stumble to the right and i fell off them 5 meters. i was mad, and tried to start going again but it took me another 200meters and kramer passed me. it ended up being my worst lap: 1:09. ending with a low 4:27.

pretty disappointed. i'm positive i could've gotten a 1:04 finish, but whatever. its the first real meet and this race accullly gave me the confidence and break through i've needed the past month. i PR'd from last years 4:27 by half a second. i really feel i can go sub 4:20 now and i'm excited that i can run with these guys again! cooled down on casey's and byron's warm up 2 miles.

A March PR is awesome. You've got more time to drop quite a bit more off that time. 4:27 right now is really good.

woke up excited. ate better than i usually do before a race. warmed up 2.25 miles before then did a lot of strides. my goal was a sub 9:27 (school record!) and i was confident i could. ben was going for the state record of 8:54, so if i was at the 200 when he was finishing i would be happy :)

race started and ben was off...never saw him again. it was mainly between me, jake heslington, assay, chuk, and other people i cant think of right now. pace felt very good. it was heslington and assay leading it, but it seemed like they were going a bit slow 4th and 5th laps. first mile went by fast and not much changed: 4:48 and i was mad they we were so off. i was really counting on jake to be on pace for a 9:20, but thats just how it happened. next lap i passed assay cause he fell of jake, who had a 5 meter lead. by the last lap he had pulled ahead by ten meters and i was mad i fell off those laps cause i still felt pretty good. i saw on the clock that i had to run a 1 min last lap to get the record so i took off as hard as i could and started pushing hard, i gained a little bit on jake but not enough, 9: 32, 1:05 last lap.

i was really bumbed i missed it was happy for the big PR and third place finish. but its not terrible. ben missed the state record by half a second, running a 8:55 :) didn't even seem like he was in the race! i'm sure i can get the record. really grateful for this meet.

later i race the 800 meter in the medley event. so i warmed up 1.5 miles then got ready. my teamates did well and i was in third when i got the baton. one i passed easily the first 200meters then i passed the next guy within 150 more. first lap was a 1 minute. i really wanted to break two. but the next 200 meters i really slowed down and didn't run fast enough. one of the guys caught me with 100 to go and he slowly started to pass me and i started to give up, thinking he got me. but then i thought about all the times i've done that and how it happened to me at nike and i surged back! we were neck to neck for the next 50 meters then i started to pull away and beat him ~.05! my legs felt like jello and i thought in my head i had broken two, but coach told me it was a 2:02. but thats alright, i was still very pleased with this race because i didn't give up and that was probably on of my best finishes i've had. cooled down with chuk 1 mile.

overall great weekend! i'm a much better runner than i was a year ago. this is a great start to the season and i hope it goes by slow. i really think my goals are doable if i work hard enough, want it enough, and have confidence that i can do it.

I'd say so... you're a much different (better!) runner than a year ago. And you're just getting going w/ this season... keep building, be confident in your coach's plan... you guys have a great thing going and come the "championship" part of the season, you'll be ready to hit those (big) goals.

Race Day: events for the day were 800m and 4x400.

I was pretty nervous for this 800 cause i didn't feel i prepared mentally early enough. it was my first open 800 of the year. I thought i had a late warm up too but it ended up fine (about 2 miles) goal was to get sub 2:01 to qualify for state but i really wanted to get sub 2. it was only me and a kid from cedar that at decent times for the heat and state was his goal too but i knew i'd have to run this in front to get it. race started and got boxed in from all the kids that sprint the first 200m, but slowly got up to 2 place by the 200 (29-30) hung behind him for a second then past him and flew to the end of the first lap (1:00) knew i had to go and i felt good. so i started to move faster. then the cedar kid all of a sudden came by me and past me on the first curve then went right in front of me and slowed down. i was mad he did that cause it threw my pace off and so i finished the curve and passed him again. last bit i started to go harder and tried to finish it hard. then right when i passed the finish line i knew i made it and was pretty reliefed.

ended up getting it by only .18 seconds. i would've beat up that cedar kid if i didn't get it. thinking about it now i think that move cost him more than me cause if he had only stuck behind me the rest of the way he might have got state himself instead of using his energy too fast/soon. i'm happy i finally have qualified for all 4 of my events. now i just need to move all the times down.

3 hours later i did the 4x400. i was hoping for a low 54 but ran it bad. ended with a 55.7ish

dont have a meet for another 2 weeks so now i have good break and have some good workouts for this next while.

first one i pushed through good and worked on my form and jazz and ended hard, 5:02. next one i started a bit slow but i did well my third and fourth lap, 5:04. third i had to push myself the most, and hit every lap just a bit slow, but finished good again, 5:03. last one i started my watch late so my first lap was messed up, 2nd lap was slow then finished it strong pushing the last 200m hard ending with a 5:02.

pm: warm up and cool 1.5 miles then a workout of 10x400's at 1600m pace minus 2-3 seconds. so for me a 1:04-5. then the scary part...1 min recovery between each rep!

first one was a bit slow, but just getting into it 1:07. then the next 4 i started getting back into the roll of things and felt good: 1:06, 1:04, 1:06, 1:06. next three, form started to drop and i wasn't running as smooth but i tried to keep it quick: 1:06, 1:06, 1:06, then last two i treated both as the last one and was finally able to get to down to where i was supposed to! 1:05, 1:05. with an ending average of: 1:06.27. i feel good about this workout. afterward it took me a while to catch my breathe so i really felt i gave it my best. there was a bit of wind that might have brought my times down a bit but really it was a beautiful day.

found an article that was...interesting. http://sock-doc.com/2011/04/stop-stretching/ this guy seems pretty smart and the way he explains it makes sense but it's just funny to think about because we've been taught different our whole lives. my favorite line is: “Have you ever seen a lion stretch before it attacks?”

am: easy 3. for some reason my right foot's planter on the left side really hurt today. it has never hurt before.

pm: race at snow canyon. i didn't really want to do this but coach made me. my plan for the 800 was just to help my teamate taylor abel state qualify, and while i was at it run a 1:58. i was worried because my planter hurt pretty bad, but i could still run on it, i just didn't know how it would handle it. warmed up 2 miles then sat around a while till our race. gun went off and i took the lead and pushed the pace. first lap i hit a 1:01, and i was mad it was so slow so i kicked it right there trying to push the pace more.

i couldn't tell how close anyone was too me, but i hope abel was close. with 200 left i started sprinting it in and then someone started to pull next to me. i looked over to see who it was and realized it was abel, so i eased off a bit cause i was really relieved it wasn't some other runner and i thought he might qualify. so we ran together a couple strides then he started pulling ahead. as he went ahead i realized that i had eased up and that i didn't want him to beat me so i kicked it in harder and started gaining a bit but couldn't make up the ground in timeand he beat me :) i was ok with it though cause he has a tough kick, and i deserved it for not pacing him for a state time (he didn't get it).

later we had the 4x400 and i barely broke 55. not happy with that either. idk. after both the races i had to take off my spike fast cause my foot was hurting so bad. but i didn't feel it too bad during the race because i ran on the outside of my foot. i'll ice and it and hopefully it can heal.

casey byron and i added to after to get our milage and byron talked about his weird movies he watch which ended up having mia run away with casey. fun run though. great start to my day.

first one felt easy and smooth, hiting every pace right on; 4:56. Next one was a tad slow on every lap, so i finished a harder at the end and ended with another 4:56. third one first two laps were right on, then third lap i felt i was going the right pace but for some reason i was 4 seconds slow! so i finished hard trying to make it up but i only made up 2 seconds, 4:58.  last one i pushed the first lap hard, second went well, third was slow (again), then finished strong for a 4:55.

very happy with these times. planter didn't hurt at all during these, but did on the cool down, but i borrowed a sock thingy that flexes your planter all night that should help. and i'll ice it tonight.  Weights after.

am: 3. nice easy morning.

pm: drank lots of water today and prepared mentally for my race very good. my goal was a 4:19 with a 1:03 first and last lap and no laps over 1:06. we got to the school and warmed up. i still wasn't feeling way smooth or very good after the usual 2 so i went another mile and a quarter and felt a lot better. did a few strides and got ready for the race.

Austin Brower was the only one ranked ahead of me at a 4:21. i was a 4:27. gun went off and he flew out of the starting line and i got stuck for a second but quickly got out. he was going really fast and i knew that would be too fast for me so i eased right behind him, came through at 1:03, perfect. now i just worked on closing the gap on us and for the next lap it stayed the same, 1:06. next lap i tried to pretend it was my last on took off faster. i felt pretty good. i could tell that austin was beginning to struggle a bit and i gained a couple meters on him here, 1:07! (red flag) last lap i took off and closed the whole gap in 200 meters and coach told me i was right on pace for the school record (4:18.12) all i needed was a :30 last 200. right there i pass Austin, but right as i passed him he spirited up and took off faster and....left me in the dust. i didn't even end close to him. he ended in a high 4:18. and i ended in a low 4:21, 1:03 last lap. then all the excess decimals added another second.

Very Very pleased with this time. 6 second PR and finally a decent time for myself. I ran all my splits where i wanted except the last two were a second slow, but really the thing that killed me was not finishing strong. that has been a challenge for me my whole high school career and i still just cant get it down. i really get outkicked 3/4 times in my races. just need to trust it and work to make it better i guess.

tomorrow is the 3200m. hoping for another PR there!

ate whatever i could shove down this morning and head to the meet. i felt better going into the warm up but after the 3.5 mile warm up i wasn't as bouncy as yesterday. goal for today was school record 9:27.

race started and i jumped to the lead and ran a solid first lap, 1:08. right what i wanted. from there i was hitting on pace but my 4th lap was quite a bit slow. i came through the first mile in 4:48. i still felt really good and i knew i could negative split it. so i pushed hard through the next couple laps but i just kept hitting 1:13 over and over instead of my 1:10 i wanted. last lap i knew i missed it but i tried to finish strong anyway, 1:05.

i was disappointed i didn't get the time i wanted. it was pretty much the same time i got at PV a couple weeks ago. But a big difference was this meet i won by ~25seconds, so i didn't have anyone pushing me like i did at PV. I know i'm in better shape than this time because of my mile yesterday. Next week i'll race it again, but this time Jordon Cross will be there and he's ranked in the top 2-3 in the state for the 2 mile (9:20) so i know he'll push me to a faster time.

good week of running. very happy with how my workouts went, and very happy with my mile time. goals for next weeks races: sub 4:20 mile, 9:20 2mile.

5 seconds off the school record on a solo run and you're disappointed? No way man. Running is a patient endeavor, sometimes maddeningly so, but keep your head up, you have the magic of youthful optimism. With some competition there's no way you won't break the record but be careful that you don't see the goal as the end. You will see progress, would you like to be one of the state's best without ur highschool record or break the record now but not be as good in state? Keep on my man.

pm: 2 mile warm and cool, then a weird Coe workout which was 100, 110, 120--till 200m. the times started at 16.1 then went to a 27 at the end. which was easy at first then it slowly got faster per rep. i started a bit too fast and ended a bit too slow. it was pretty cold and rainy but wasn't bad during the workout. my stomach only hurt a bit on the warm and cool. good workout. we have panther relays tomorrow. should be fun.

What's a Coe workout? Are you training for the hurdles or something?

From Michael Finch on Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 18:44:41 from 75.169.82.89

no, just a sprinting workout for our panther relays tomorrow, i guess. i haven't been doing hurdle stuff lately because my planter has been hurting, but it should be good in time for SUU's meet for the steeple!

pm: had relay's galore today. first race we did the distance medley, going for the school record. the order is: 1200, 400, 800, 1600. and i had the 1600. so i watched my team run great races and coach and i decided that i just needed to run a 4:35 to keep it low key so i could race well this weekend. i got the baton and i felt very good. hit all my laps perfect except my 3rd was slow, but i finished fast and ended with a 4:33. i was very happy with this time because i still felt i could go that pace a couple more lap. hopeful i can get close to that pace for my  mile this weekend. jordan cross with be there so i'll have someone to race with! :)

next i had the 4x800. i went my goal mile pace for this weekend. taking the 2nd lap faster, hit a 2:10. good easy race.

then the 4x400 i hit a 59. hopefully my 800 pace. very pleased with today. makes me pumped up for this weekend! lookin for some big PR's and some school records!

am: 3. felt a bit uneasy in the stomach.

so today i had the 1600m. i felt way more nervous for this race than any race this season. i think its because i've been thinking about it too much or something. but it made my stomach go wack and i was just scared. i was pretty sad that jordon cross wasn't running this, and looking at the time entries i knew i had to run this alone. goal was a sub 4:20.

warmed up 2.75 then got ready for the race. turned out that my race took 20 minutes longer than i thought to get started, so a bit before i took another .5 mile warm up then got on my spikes and did some striders. it was a really windy so i planned on racing hard when the wind was with me, then stride it out on the windy part. my nerves started to leave though.

race started and i went out fast planning on a 1:03 first lap. i pushed through the wind good but ended with a 1:04. felt good still so pushed the next 200 hard and did well, then the next 200 i really struggled and the wind was getting in my head, 1:07. then i got going again but i just couldn't get my legs moving. same kind of thing happened, 1:08. i still felt very good and so i kicked it hard and ended with a 1:04 again for a time of 4:23.

i was pretty mad after this race because not only was i far off my time but i didn't push myself. i just dont know how to pick up the pace at the right times when i'm by myself. i feel i can go under 4:20, even today, but i just wish someone was with me. like last week thats why i raced so well for myself, i had Brower to push me hard. its a lame excuse i know, and i just need to learn to do it. i cooled down right after, by myself, and thought a lot about the race and i'm alright about it now. i know i'll get my time down at BYU.

If you feel like you had an "off" race and still dropped a 4:23, you're gonna be way under 4:20 when it all comes together.

woke up and ate some breakfeast. my stomach still hurt a bit. got to the meet and warmed up 2.75 miles and prepared for the race mentally. i figured Jordon Cross was going to run about a 9:10, so my goal was to stick on his back the whole time and never let him get too far ahead. got on my spikes and did a bunch of strides and warm up drills and dumped some water on my back.

race started and i got a terrible start. got cut off bad and was in 3 to last with 26 people in the race. i could see cross in the front getting farther ahead so i went out into lane 5 and sprinted hard to pass everyone quickly then got right on his back, 1:07. i felt pretty good and just stared him down trying to keep my strides quick 1:10. he started to pull ahead (only 2nd lap!) and i tried to stick on him 1:11. he just kept getting further ahead but my mile split was 4:41 (1:13) so i was still on pace for the school record and a solid race. but cross was 20 meters ahead and it just kept getting bigger and it really discouraged me. the next two laps he extended to a 100m lead and i was just so mad that i let him get so far ahead. i was way off pace. i felt like i was pushing hard though so i dont know what the deal was. with 1.5 laps left mike buckly, came on my back which was good because it pushed me to go harder and get back on my pace but i know that is sad that i had to even worry about him beating me. he passed me with 300 left but i surged and passed him again and ended with a 9:31 (1:05 last lap).

dumb race. that is not the time i should be hitting. i had someone to push me hard and i did terrible with it. he ended up getting a 9:15 by the way. this is my third race in a row getting this time. i know one of these times i'll get it. just need to make it happen. cooled down 2 miles with cross and talked about the race and other various stuff. he is really a cool guy, its sad i'll pretty much never see him again after this season.

an hour or so later i had the 800m. i was ranked 3rd behind cross and brigam. i was sad about this race too. splits were: 59, 1:00. ending with a 2:00.18. PR'd by half a second. but got 6th, getting outkicked by 3 kids. overall not a very good day. but i did learn some stuff.

pm: workout of 4x1600m repeats. my stomach has been hurting still. i dont know why. its annoying, but probably not as bad as i'm making it sound. warm and cool was 1.5 and my goal pace was 4:56.

it was a very hot, dry, windy day today. first one i did it just like my race last weekend racing hard on the non windy side then carrying it through the other side. my splits were good and i hit my 4:56. next one i hit my same splits but i guess my millaseconds were high, 4:59. next one was the same story and i figured that might happen so i pushed hard on the last one, but the wind had the same idea and i was at a stands till, plus i couldn't lick my lips because my throat and tounge were just as dry for these last two, 4:59. last one i went out 3 seconds fast trying to give me more room for the end but then my third lap was 3 seconds slow...4:59.

overall i was happy with my workout today. i gave my right effort that i was supposed to. This weekend we're going to the davis invite and i'll get to race some big name people in the 2 mile like conner mantz, chuk mitchell, and tomy gutierrez! kramer is doing the mile so i wont race him, but close enough.

forgot. weights after. felt good. then did 15!!! pull ups. new record.

first one i hit a 1:02.  then a 1:03. then a 1:03. then the rest got shorter and shorter and i tried hard to hit my times. i dont remember the exact ones after that but some were 3 seconds slow and some were right on. i was dead when we finished i felt like i had done well. i figured out my average after the workout and i remember that: 1:04.3. which is only a little slow. good workout. the rest of the week will be easier now in order to prepare for davis. i'm pretty excited!

Race: Davis Invite (2 Miles) 00:09:30, Place overall: 3

race was at 5:10 so i had all day to sit around and get nervous for my race. abel ran the mile and got a 4:24 so i was excited that i would be a fast track and i could get a sub 9:20. i thought a lot about my past races and thought that i had been warming up too long so i went 2 instead thinking it would help my legs stay fresh in the race. then i went on the field and did some striders and got ready to race.

race started and i got an alright start. all of us in the first ally were kind of pushed to the back but i knew it was a long race so i just stayed and hit the first lap in a 1:08. mantz already had a 50 meter lead on us so my goal was just to push our group and slowly pull him in. but after the first lap everyone just slowed up and didn't want to take the lead, so i got frustrated and surged to the front and tried to pick it up. the next 3 laps i ran solid but didnt gain a single thing on conner (now 100m ahead), but after the first two laps he just stayed the same distance and it really frustrated me we were going so slow. hit the first mile in 4:41ish. My stomach hurt like crazy but it didnt affect me too bad other than i had to use the restroom.

i still led the race the next lap and tomy and chuk kept me on my toes but i could tell i wasn't leading it very good because we kept hitting slower and slower laps. but i just couldn't get the time down. i threw in surges every once in a while but it didn't help. with 600 left chuk past me..and i fell right off. i tried to finish hard and gave it all the last 100m but i still finished with a stinkin 9:30.  afterward i laid on the ground and i couldn't breathe. i felt really hot and dizzy all over and i couldn't see straight. when i got up the air hurt my lungs so i grabbed my pants and breathed in them and that helped. it took a long time to settle down and even after that my head still hurt for most of the night.

i am just really frustrated right now. a 9:30 is not something i'm happy with. i mean, i was happy with it at the beginning of the season, but not after 4 races. i'm trying and training harder than ever but nothing is coming from it yet! Chuk ran a really good last lap which gave him a good time of 9:24. Conner ran a very fast 9:14 race by himself. tomy ran a 4:14 mile then a 9:36 in our race. very good day for them.

~50ish minutes later i had the 3rd leg of the 4x800 race our team was doing. i still was feeling terrible and my race showed it. i think my split was a 2:04 or something. we missed our school record my half a second or so.

If I remember correctly, a week or two before Nike Regionals last fall, you had a disappointing race. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't up to your level of expectation. Then you turned it around, went to Nike, ran 15:10, and nearly stole the show.

You can do that again. All the work you put in is there, and it will come through. Trust the training, trust your coach, and trust yourself. Don't force it - just relax and let it happen (that's advice I should have been taking myself lately).

PM: Workout today. 1.5 mile warm/cool with 1x3200 and 3x1600 with 5 minute recovery in between.

I could tell it was going to be a rough day when the warm up felt like the cool down. 3200 goal was 9:52. Started out on pace for the first lap and it slowly got worse and worse, ending with a 10:20. Terrible. We took a little break and I stood under the hose for a good little while trying to cool off.  Then started the first mile.  I really tried to brush off the 3200 and hit my 4:50 pace for the mile. Tried really hard but ended with a 5:01. Threw up on the recovery.  Next one same kind of story, 5:03.  Last one I really wanted to at least get sub 5. Pushed hard. Barely got a 4:59.

Afterward, I was spent. The 1.5 mile cool down took half an hour. When I got home, I laid in bed. The end.

am: ran three this morning because my back felt a little better from getting it alined from a friend of mine. but it started hurting towards the end and tightened up again. i kind of wish i would've skipped this run now.

pm: drove up to BYU and got there 50 minutes before my race. i forget my trainers on the bus so i ran barefoot around there grass to see how i felt. it was ok until i started jumping hurdles and it just really killed after that. i tried for about 20 more minutes to see if i could handle it but it just hurt so bad. so i dropped out of my race because i knew i wouldn't be able to finish it and it would just ruin it more.

I was really bummed about dropping the steeple chase because i know i would've had a big chance of winning it and getting a qualifying time for southwest regionals and this was my only chance. so now i probably wont be able to go if i dont get a sub 9:20 two mile. and the way my back is right now, its not looking good :/ tomy's coach gave me so good advice on what he thought which helped and tomorrow my uncle is having me see a back specialist that happens to be up tomorrow that will look at it and maybe give me some stuff to help it cease until the end of state. so hope that goes well. I dont have a race tomorrow, but on saturday i have the 800 and 1600m. those should be a bit better since there are no hurdles...we'll see what happens. sad day.

am: felt alright. my back still kind of hurt. warmed up a mile and a half and it felt better than yesterday. my first race was the 800. i wanted to just see how it felt to see if i would go all out or not. felt confident though.

race started and i went into 5-6. the only time my back hurt as right then and then i didn't think about it anymore. came through the first lap at 1:00 feeling great. so i pushed the pace and moved up into first with 250 left. then some guy surged past me and slowed down as someone came to my side to box me in. i lost a lot of mommentum and it was hard to get it back because i had to stay stiff this whole race to keep my back from tightening. but i still finished fairly strong getting 4 or so in my heat. time...2:00.01! i yelled out in fury when i finished because i didn't break 2. but it was a PR. i'll get it next time!

cooled down to mile and streched really good and took some pills. prepared mentally for the mile. it was a loaded race. warmed another mile and get ready.

back hurt more than the 800 but i knew it wouldn't hurt during the race. RACE: started and i went straight the back of the front back. came through at 1:05. i knew that was way to slow so i tried to surge and keep at it. it was hard to breathe for some reason. i dont remember much of the rest of the race except i did pretty bad. i was way off the back and with a lap to go i was already at 4:19. i pushed as hard as i could and tried to finish good, ending with a 4:23. afterward my legs felt so so tired. i couldn't even stand.

the reason i was so tired, i think, is because i just couldn't breathe. i think my back injury affected that. but i was kind of happy that i was able to get close to my time. the rest of the meet i stretched and took pills. hopefully my back will clear up before region.

i ran the first one with their time trial and kept it solid. the first lap was 1:05 so i didn't have to go that fast on the rest of the laps to hit my time so i got a 4:47 pretty easy. then a 3 min rest and i did the last one. came through too fast again but it was a bit harder. just had to keep a hard pace and ended with a 4:49. good workout. my back wasn't bad. i stretched it really good and it only hurt the first two laps of both of them. cooled down 1.5 and my legs were dead.

race started and i took out into the lead and came through the first lap at 1:04. i tried to surge here and i kind of did. 6 people were on my back. next lap wasn't amazing, i think it was a 1:08 or so. I could feel my legs slowing down and Abel came and started to pass me so i surged again cause that meant i was slowing down. 1:10. at the beginning of the last lap Jason just blew by me i could not go with him. then another person and another person passed me and i just couldn't run. the last 100 i could hear Nephi (sophmore) coming close to me and i really didn't want him to beat me so i gave it my all and edge him out at least.

i was really bummed about this race. i don't know. i just really feel a lot more tired, and i can't race! i want to run well so bad but i can't get myself to do it. i think i really just don't have any confidence in myself right now.

pm: my back hurt more today for some reason. we got to the meet and it was pretty windy but the rain was holding off. i warmed up 1.5 miles and tried to get energized for the race. still felt tried though. race started and i took back only hurt for the first two laps then it went away. I went off fast again trying to hit the first lap faster to give myself more time to play with. i came through at 1:08 but i felt it was the right effort with how the wind was. i kept trying to push hard and keep each lap consistent. at one point i had a 10 meter lead :/ came through the mile at 4:50 and then i started to feel Jason on my heels again. i knew he was going to stay there and wouldn't pass me till the last lap because of his kick so i had to try to get some distance before then. However my laps didn't go too well. i think i hit a 1:16 on one of them.

last two laps he was still on me and i started moving there and he went right with me. last lap i took off hard and with 200 left he still hadn't passed me so i felt i had a chance. i kept kicking and then with 50 left he began to pull to my side and i just don't believe in my kick so he edged me out again easily.

took a couple hours off then we had the 800m. warmed up a mile then got ready. the first heat had one guy that should've been in ours. he ran a 2:02. then we got up and started and i got cut off but i wasn't too worried. pace started out really slow and we didn't hear our lap pace who knows there. then the last lap i felt good and tried to make my move but i was squared in. i tired to get out but i couldn't and the front pack started moving ahead. i was so mad because i was stuck. finally a hole broke out (200m later) and i got out and started kicking. i counted places and i was tied for 4th and the kid next to me needed the 4th spot to make state and it wouldn't make a difference for me cause i already so i let him get it. but turns out the kid from the other heat beat us so he didn't end up getting to go anyway! so much for that. 2:04.

then a bit later we i was the first leg in the 4x400. started out in the last lane and i just ran bad. i think it was a low :57. made it so the team didn't qualify it for state. it was just a bad region for me and it made it so our team got 3rd. i just need to get some confidence and fix my problems cause i only have state left so i gotta get myself in gear.

am: easy 2. felt pretty good. last morning run of my high school season.

pm: last speed workout till state. 2x100m, 2x200m, 2x300m, 1x400m all out with full recovery. i just wanted to do well and mostly see how my back was doing. warm up it felt great (1.5miles) then put on my spikes and then the on the first 100m i took off and i flew! the fastest i've run in about 2 weeks. next 100 same thing. i was so so so happy that my back felt great. didn't hurt at all. my stomach felt kind of sick and i felt throw up come up a few times but that happens every once in a while on workouts.

the 200's went by fast and the 300's i hit a 41 then the next one was terrible, like a 44. the last 400 i kicked it hard but and came in solid with a ~:58. i was having a hard time breathing after but i was just so happy my back felt so good.

on the cool down i went about 200m and my stomach just felt super weird so i slowed down a bit then BAM! i threw up, then again. and i started to black out for a second and fell to the ground. when i came to coach had helped me up and was walking me back to the school. i stopped again and tried to say something but instead more came out...just a bunch of beans and rice from lunch. Yuck! i think it was from drinking too much water or something. plus it was super super hot again. idk. i'll get my energy back by state. i'm feeling really pumped up. i'm going to get a school record! i'm going to get a school record!

Then you know what, with that killer attitude, you go and break all of the school records if you can, you go out there and win it, you've put in the work, now put out the effort and win.

well this is my last entry. I went running with the team today for the last time, just to say goodbye and stuff. Turns out they were doing 3 mile repeats. the last two and a half months I've only run 5ish times, nothing in the past 3 weeks. but Tyson Boyer and Casey Kimzey (both graduated and haven't run much that past little which) decided to just do one mile and try to break 5 so I did it too.

warmed up a mile, then stopped for 10 minutes or so stretching and talking about how out of shape we were. finally we quit putting it off and started! (it was a dirt mile by my coaches house) we started out fairly fast trying to get moving. I was having a very tough time breathing because I'm sick (nice time to be sick, eh?) but just stuck it in there. Casey led the first half at about 2:19, followed by Tyson at 2:22, then me at 2:24. at this point I just wanted to give up. I was so dead. but I kept at it because they were too, so last bit I just tried to push it and started to catch Tyson, then passed him and caught Casey and he fell off a bit, but Tyson stuck right on my heels.

then he went right up on my side and I tried to push to win but I just couldn't go any faster so we finished side my side, I have no idea who won. I looked at the watch and was relieved to see it said 4:59.1!!! so I didn't care who won anyway (casey finished good with 5:10ish)

barely cooled down a mile, but my chest hurt so bad and my nose was going crazy. but i'm very glad I ran. Perfect run to end on! now off to the Philippines!

Now you have to run 4:59 on your first day back in a couple years!

Good luck to you.
